A wide variety of coordinate systems Now that GPS is widespread, the use of UTM coordinates in an ITRFxx (ETRF89 for Europe) or Lambert 93 / RGF93 (for France) geodetic frame is becoming standard. However, the vast majority of existing documents refer to older map projections. In addition, the documentation included with GPS receivers can often not be understood by untrained personnel, and the information is not accurate enough for making precise transformations. From Newton's apple to GPS coordinates Everybody knows the story of Newton's apple: an apple fell on the young scientist's head and all of a sudden he was struck by the law of universal gravitation. At that moment, the Earth lost its presumed circular or ellipsoidal shape and got a new one called the "geoid" (was it actually waiting for this form?). Geodetic datums, nevertheless rigorously defined by eminent scientists, gave a different center and variable dimensions to our common Earth. A few centuries later, our GPS receivers are affected by these consequences and have to juggle with transformation parameters varying in numbers (sometimes 3, sometimes 7) or even hidden in complex grids. And let's not forget the continental shift which does not make things any easier. Furthermore, the three-dimensional Earth has to be transformed in order to be represented in two dimensions. Everyone understands that trying to wrap a ball in a sheet of paper is not an easy task and that the paper gets wrinkled or torn. All of that, as well as the definitions of Mercator, Lambert and UTM projections, will be explained during a training course by using diagrams rather than incomprehensible formulas. Legal frame TopoSat is a registered training organization at the regional control agency for vocational training (Service Régional de Contrôle de la Formation Professionnelle) of Ile de France under the reference number 11753298275 assigned on January 26, 2000 (see opposite). Because our training courses are aimed primarily at companies and businesses, they are within the legal frames governing continuing vocational training.
