Navigation, GIS or surveying? The application of GPS is very broad, ranging from navigation devices for cars or for hikers with an accuracy of a few meters, to GIS products for accuracies of a few decimeters to a meter, up to geodetic GPS receivers yielding a centimeter accuracy, depending on the equipment. The use and implementation of these different products may pose different problems, and the prices can vary from one to two hundred-fold. Natural or differential mode In the differential mode, the accuracy can be improved by using corrections sent by a reference GPS station. Corrections can be applied to code or carrier-phase measurements. Real-time or post-processing Real-time processing is possible when receiving differential corrections using: - radio link - GSM / GPRS - telecommunications satellite - WAAS or EGNOS satellite Post-processing requires saving additional data which will be processed in the office in combination with data received from: - its own reference GPS receiver - a permanent GPS network.
