Civil engineering offers enormous potential for surveying services. Using GPS in that field of activity seems thus quite natural. There are so many applications that not all of them can be mentioned here, but TopoSat offers field services, consultation at the implementation stage or training courses for all of them.
Preliminary studies and site reconnaissance
On large linear sites - especially abroad - the points marked in the field can be plotted on a map using coordinates provided by simple GPS navigation devices. Way points (points, axes, crossings ...) can also be located in the field, even if the available documents are hardly (or not at all) georeferenced.
Preliminary or final staking out
Usually the first jobs to be done on a new construction site are staking out the project area, finding and clearing access routes, taking geotechnical soundings and installing temporary premises. Using GPS right from the start saves valuable time because it is possible to accurately stake out isolated points or lines from distant base points without first having to establish a traverse on the site.
Afterwards, GPS will be used for many stake out tasks (platforms, axes, manholes, catch points, etc.).
As-built drawings, earthwork volumes
GPS is the ideal tool for all kinds of surveying and follow-up work to be done on cleared areas for housing projects, road construction sites or large technical earthworks (i.e. for burying nuclear waste), etc.
Machine guidance
Companies are increasingly equipping their earthmoving machines with GPS receivers for stakeless earthworks.
For more information on these techniques, please consult the Trimble website.
