Overview A digital terrain model is a schematic representation of the Earth's surface by means of a digital file connecting positions (XY or latitude / longitude) and heights in a regular grid. There are any number of existing data formats, among which the following may be mentioned: - Contour lines which form a vectorial representation without being a DTM - Text files which are a succession of lines of type "-0.80129983,45.42038826,-2.504" - Image files similar to the one shown on the right (10 000 hectares surveyed with a height accuracy of about 5 centimeters). The choice of formats depends on the applied software. Multiple data sources DTMs are produced using: - Topographic surveys using conventional or GPS methods - Aerial photographs - Airborne Lidar - Satellite images The best-suited method depends on the size of the area to be represented and the accuracy required. Global models DTMs covering almost the entire planet with an accuracy of a few meters can be found on the market. They are often useful for preliminary studies.
