GPS makes possible what hardly seemed feasible up to now. Surveying isolated points under acceptable financial conditions has always been a hard bet. Traversing and connecting works needed to carry out such jobs were very tedious and took a long time. Unfortunately, contractors were usually unaware of the actual amount of work involved and in the end, the delivered result - a mere scattering of points - made the price of this service very expensive. Now that these preliminary tasks are no longer required, it has become possible to determine the height and coordinates of a point accurately in a given reference frame. Using techniques compatible with the required accuracy level Depending on the user's needs, there are GPS receivers designed for: - the general public for obtaining accuracies of about 10 meters, - map-making with accuracies below the meter, - geodetic applications for reaching centimeter accuracies. Differential techniques are used for the latter two cases. Examples of successful projects - Bus shelters - Air beacons - Piezometers - Shafts (more than 500 points spread over the whole Beauce region for groundwater studies) - Pylons (EDF power lines) - Bore holes (soundings) - Sewerage EDF = Electricité de France / French electricity board
